1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open it to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next four sentences after that in your LJ with these instructions: No digging for your favorite book - it has to be the nearest one.
5. Tag five people.

The nearest book happens to be what I just bought at the store - "If Democrats Had Any Brains, they'd be Republicans" by Ann Coulter.

"For most such killers, mass murder is their first serious crime. It's not against the law to be crazy - in some jurisdictions it actually makes you more viable as a candidate for public office. The best we can do is enact policies that will reduce the death toll when these acts of carnage occur, as they will in a free and open society of 300 million people, most of whom have cable tv. Only one policy has ever been shown to deter mass murder: concealed-carry laws."

Not tagging anyone. If you wanna do it, do it!

Okay, I'm game for an entry.

(Covering eyes and reaching blindly on her cluttered desk...)

Okay, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning Russian, 2nd ed.

Page 123, fifth sentence down, reads (luckily for us, eh?):

" ("Where are you from?"). "

The next four sentences read:

*For most professions, simply add a -ka or -***a [sorry, we've Cyrillic characters here and this comment window doesn't have rich text...but if I had to transliterate that last one, I'd have to go with "-nitsa".] to speak about a female. Remember that many professions do not change.

*You can easily get information by learning and asking a few simple questions.

(And the next two are from the next chapter heading):

*You should now be able to breeze through your introductions, telling people yor name, where you work, and what coutnry or state you are from. But before you launch into a lengthy conversations with your new acquaintances, you should also introduce your guests to the members of your family who are standing around.

Okay, it was supposed to be the first book to hand. What can I say? I like to read a wide variety of topics. FWIW, other books currently on my desk are:

How to Draw Manga, Vol. 1: Ultimate Manga Lessons, by Hikaru Hayashi, ISBN4-7661-1524-4

Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things, by Cy Tymony, ISBN-13: 978-0-7407-3859-3, and ISBN-10: 0-7407-3859-3

Babylon 5 Scripts of J. Michael Straczynski, Vol 12, ISBN-10: 0-9795393-1-5

Serenity, The Official Visual Companion, by Joss Whedon, ISBN 1-84576-082-4

The Complete Sherlock Holmes, vol. 1, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
ISBN 1-59308-034-4

and

The Works of John Donne, ISBN 1-8536-400-8

Plus any number of beads, art supplies and clothing catalogs, because I am hopelessly addicted to the shiny.
