“Awww come on!” Jayne protested.
“I said no,” Mal replied. “And that’s final.”
“Come on Mal, can’t I at least get one of them girls that jumps outta a cake? It is my birthday after all!”
“We don’t have the time or money to spend on anything extravagant. Work’s been scarce enough lately. Whatever you can afford on your savings is what you can have.”
“Savings?” Jayne asked, as if he’d never heard the term.
“Yes, savings. And as I understand it, the crew is going to throw a party for you. They’ve gotten a few gifts and there will be cake, but beyond that we can’t afford more.”
Jayne managed a faintly dejected look, though it lacked much substance behind it and Mal knew that.
“I’ll make you a cake,” River said, passing them in the corridor, not saying another word.
Jayne looked after her a moment. “Wonder if she could jump out…”
“Don’t even think in that direction, Jayne. Last thing I need is a murder onboard my ship. And I’m not gonna be the one to clean it up neither.” With that said, Mal stalked off to do his captainy duties.
