Broken Little Girl
Spoilers: Firefly in General
Rating: PG
Summary: A conversation between Sheppard Book and River Tam.
“Symbol,” River stated softly but firmly.
“What is it River honey?” Sheppard Book asked, looking up from his study. He’d again offered to watch River whilst Simon went off ship.
“The book is a symbol. Your faith.”
“This book IS a symbol,” he responded carefully. “But it’s not my faith. These are the words of the one I follow.”
“God?”
“Yes, God,” he smiled softly. “These are the guidelines He gave us to live by.”
“God is not quantifiable.”
“God requires faith,” he corrected softly. “If you believe in Him, that faith can and will make very real changes in your life.”
She paused a moment, as if considering it all. “You haven’t obeyed all the words.”
“No, but God created us. We’re human and we all sin. He will forgive us if we ask it.”
“He doesn’t have to forgive. He doesn’t need humans,” she surmised.
“No, but He chooses to, because he loves us.”
“Even me?” she asked. “Broken little girl.”
“We are all damaged goods in some form or another, child, and God loves us all.”
