I saw this theory posted on Aca-Fan http://www.henryjenkins.org/2007/05/transforming_fan_culture_into.html

Not his theory but interesting considering who is running FanLib [the former CEO of Yahoo, and supposedly a former RIAA executive who has started setting precedent in case law on music downloads].

Quote on Aca-Fan, from AngiePen:
[see her post here: http://angiepen.livejournal.com/38593.html?format=light]

"You know, this is probably just me being paranoid here but since the TOS prohibits any posting of material which violates someone else's copyright, they could in theory have set up this site to draw in as many fanfic writers as possible with the intention of turning around and smacking all of them for copyright violation, whether that means direct prosecution of people who are writing fics based on properties whose owners are represented on the FanLib board, or sending notification with names and e-mails and copies of stories to the copyright holders who are not associated with the site. I'm just saying."

Given who's running it... think about it? There's no case law on fanfiction and it's not illegal [under Fair Use Law], but what if this is to try and SET some case law down? So the corporate organization can theoretically control even more and thereby profit from it? They have already shown an inclination to prohibit fair use. These people have no care for our fandom culture, did no research on it, considered us all mindless, gloryhogging robots, patronized us and expected us to go along for the ride?

Uh huh. Yeah. Right.

They should have at least taken the time to research the culture they were about to try to invade. Any anthropologist could have told them that. Duh.

It's a bit conspiracy theorist, and I mostly think these people want to make money, you know? But yeah, I'm right there with you on the not good. Did you see the article about the ties to the RIAA (http://rez-lo.livejournal.com/87495.html)?
