Munch hated being out of New York City. In New York you knew what to expect and dealing with other precincts and cops was pretty easy and routine. Outside of the city, everyone had their own way of doing things; their own procedures and protocols. And the fact that some people were so anal about following them to the letter was what irritated him most.

“I think it’s funny how a slimy piece of crap will get more consideration than the victim did,” he griped out loud.

“They haven’t seen what we’ve seen and they don’t know the evidence in this case,” Fin replied, trying to be fair. They’d both already had their heads ripped off by the administrator in charge of this New Jersey hospital. Their suspect had high-tailed it out of the city and had made it this far before a shoot-out ensued, ending with the suspect seriously wounded.

A few minutes later, a man limped by. “Dr. Gregory House?” Munch asked in an authoritative tone. He’d already been told that House was the one treating the suspect and had overheard that the doctor was… well, a handful was putting it mildly.

Instead of an immediate response, the doctor turned, studied them a moment and took the lollipop out of his mouth. “Very good detectives.”

Great, a smart-ass. Munch thought. “We need to speak with Mr. Turner.”

“I’m sorry detectives,” House added extra emphasis on the title. “I’m afraid he’s rather unconscious at the moment. You know, that might have something to do with blood loss and being shot, but then I’m just a doctor.”

“When can we speak with him?” Munch fought the urge to throttle the man.

“Probably when he wakes up would be best. Unconscious people are a bit hard to talk to,” he said the last part while walking into the next room, obviously trying to avoid dealing with the detectives.

Munch and Fin looked at each other for a long moment. “I’ll go try the hospital administrator again,” Fin finally said. “You stay here and watch for Dr. Know-it-all.”

“Why did you do it Sydney?”

“I only did what I thought was best Jarod.”

“Best for whom? Me? Or the Centre?”

“Jarod, you know that I have no loyalties left with that place. When I think of all the things I did… everything that was done to you…”

“Then don’t lie to me again Sydney.”

Sydney sighed and sat back. “You know you have been like a son to me.”

Jarod’s face registered a moment of shock and longing. He’d always wanted to hear that… had always thought of Sydney like a father figure.

“It’s so great to finally have family,” Nadia said quietly. “I thought for the longest time that I would be alone for the rest of my life.”

“But you’re not,” Sydney pointed out. “And I’m glad we found you too. I always wanted a sister.”

“Even though Arvin Sloane is my father?” Nadia wondered. “You are glad even despite that… because I know that bothers you.”

“The fact that Sloane and I don’t get along has no bearing on our relationship. We are sisters and that is something special.”

“What’s up chief?” Jim asked his partner as they got into the pick up. “You got real quiet there. And anyone who knows anything about you, knows that you and quiet parted ways long before we met.”

“Just thinking Jim.”

“That could be dangerous.”

“I’m serious. I’m thinking about the past few weeks and all that happened. I… I am so sorry about the publicity…”

“And I’m sorry about your thesis, but I do appreciate what you did for me.” Jim paused, unsure how to continue. “I said some pretty nasty things… I should have known that you would put our friendship first.”

“Jim, we’re not friends… we’re way past that.”

Before Sandburg could finish his thought, Jim did for him. “You’re right chief, we’re brothers.”

******************************************************

"Brothers?" Jack mused. "Gotta say I like the sound of that."

Daniel shot him an amused look. "The SGC hasn't been the same without you."

"Is Mitchell working out okay?"

Daniel nodded. "But we could use you back there."

"What is with that place? You all keep trying to get me out of retirement." Jack rolled his eyes. "Well not this time buddy."

Daniel smirked. "Famous last words Jack... famous last words..."

“I don’t understand,” Temperance Brennan replied as she studied the decomposing body before her. Yet another pop culture reference has been made that she didn’t follow. Some anthropologists were concerned with the new and the now, but she didn’t bother to be. She dealt with the past… how people had died… not how they lived. Being in the know on the pop culture only was a bold reminder of what she had lost as a child – her innocence… believing that the incidentals mattered.

“Sweetie, you really need to get out more,” Angela Montenegro pointed out as she worked on finishing her sketch so she could put it into the computer to try and generate a facial match.

“The last time we did that as I recall, we ended up high on drugs.”

“With one of the more compelling cases you’ve had. Given that, I’d think you would want to get out more.”

“Contrary to popular belief, I do like to have fun… but on my own terms. Unfortunately, work always interferes.”

“Sweetie, you just need to take a break… try saying no once in a while.” Bones didn’t answer, so she continued. “It sure seems like that’s all you’re saying to Booth. I think he really likes you.”

“We’re colleagues. Nothing more.”

“Yeah, keep telling yourself that,” Angela mumbled, just as Booth walked in the door.

Frodo paused in his reverie. Today was an important day. It was one year ago that it had all ended… that they’d defeated Sauron, Saruman and all their evil forces. And things were still as confusing as they’d ever been, at least for him.

Sam had settled down for the simple life and it suited him, but Frodo no longer felt a citizen of the Shire.

“Mr. Frodo?” a voice questioned, shaking him completely from his thoughts. “Mr. Frodo?” the voice asked again, concern present.

“I’m alright Sam.”

“You shouldn’t be dwellin’ on events. The ring was destroyed…” Sam always had been able to tell what he was feeling. “We have a surprise for you Mr. Frodo.”

“What is it Sam?” he asked, curious now.

“Come with me.”

Frodo almost declined but Sam was far too excited to refuse him. He followed him to Bilbo’s old house and was surprised when the lights flashed on to reveal his companions.

Aragorn was the first to speak, as befitted the kingly ranger. “My little friend, we are all in your debt and thought perhaps you could use some company on this night.” He paused and smiled slightly. “And we brought presents and food as well.”

“Tis the least we could do,” Legolas added.

“I assure you this was not necessary,” Frodo started.

“Aye laddie, it was.” Gimli was there of course.

Frodo paused another moment, tempted to try and leave and lose himself in his thoughts once again. Instead, he spoke, “There’s food you say?”

Everyone laughed. And instead of spending the night in dark thoughts, he spent the night in fellowship with friends.

Since Irina’s betrayal, Jack had sealed himself off from the world… even dangerously so. He was emotionally distant with even his own daughter. He did it partly for the job, but mostly out of his own fear of being betrayed and hurt yet again. Trusting someone, loving someone, meant opening yourself up for the possibility of being hurt.

And he couldn’t allow that. And if it did happen, he wasn’t sure how he’d react or who he might hurt, both emotionally and physically.

The phone rang, startling him. “Bristow,” he answered in his gruff voice.

“You’re not alone Jack. You never have been.”

He was caught off guard… vulnerable… much to his dismay. “Irina?”

“Turn on the radio Jack. Don’t lose faith.” The call promptly ended.

Flipping on the radio, he noticed that it was on a different station than he’d left it. A song was just starting to play.

We all drink to forget
Some of us more than most
When reality gets too real
And the fires of hell to close
But I'm here to let you know that
That you can make it through
If you believe that someone is watchin' over you

And call it an angel
Call it a muse
And call it karma that you've got comin' to you
What's the difference
What's in name
What matters most is never ever losin' faith
'Cause it's gonna be alright
You're not alone tonight

We all have our days
When nothing goes as planned
Not a soul in the world
Seems to understand
And for someone to talk to
You'd give anything
Well go on and cry out loud
'Cause someone's listenin'

Yeah, and call it an angel
Call it a muse
And call it karma that you've got comin' to you
What's the difference
What's in name
What matters most is never ever losin' faith
'Cause it's gonna be alright
You're not alone tonight

Keep your faith alive
You're not the only one

Yeah, and call it an angel
Call it a muse
Call it karma that you've got comin' to you
What's the difference
What's in name
What matters most is never ever losin' faith
Yeah, you're gonna be alright
You're not alone tonight

Oh you can cry if you want to, go on

For the first time, ever, Jack Bristow felt a lone tear roll down his cheek.

“I don’t see why we can’t just go ahead and take a vacation. The captain offered.”

“Captain’s got a lot going on right now and he needs us here for the time being.”

“Zoe, the captain is perfectly capable of taking care of himself. I think the whole loyal second mate thing is great and all, but we deserve a vacation.”

“I know sweetheart, and we’ll get one. Just as soon as things settle down a bit.”

“Things won’t ever settle down, sweetheart.”

“This is our job Wash… our life. And after all that Mal has done for us…”

“Oh no the great guilt trip.”

Zoe raised an eyebrow, a classic sign that she was losing her patience and fast becoming irritated. “Tell you what… you just bear with me and trust me and I’ll make sure the vacation is something unforgettable.” She leaned down to kiss his cheek, then his lips, kissing him until he was nearly breathless.

“I’d be a foolish man to argue with that,” he managed after the kiss.

“Yes, you would,” she countered with a look.
