Eric woke the next morning slowly, allowing the memory of the night before to sink in. Nadia lay draped across his chest, still sound asleep. He shifted, carefully sliding out of the bed without waking her and pulled on his boxers. What had he done? He’d completely screwed up this assignment! What if they’d been attacked last night? He was supposed to protect this woman.
“Eric?” a sleepy voice asked softly. Eric looked over to see that Nadia had woken and was smiling at him sleepily. “Why’d you leave me alone?” she asked softly, interrupting his thoughts.
“Nadia, last night…”
“Was wonderful!” She smiled, pulling a sheet around her body and moving to sit next to him. She placed a hand on his cheek. “Tell me you don’t regret it, please Eric.” She looked re-energized. “I’ve never felt so wonderful and alive in my life… so loved.”
Eric felt horribly guilty. He wasn’t the type to give in and have a one night stand, but she’d needed someone, and he’d wanted to be there for her. He didn’t want to hurt her because he knew she’d already been hurt so much. And also, what was Sydney going to say?
“Eric?” Nadia asked again, rousing him from his thoughts. “We’re stuck together for a week. We might as well be comfortable with each other. I’m definitely comfortable with you.” The last part was said with a sly grin. She leaned in to kiss him but he jerked back and stood up. “What is it?”
“Nadia, we’re not supposed to be doing this.”
“According to whose rules? The CIA? The CIA can’t protect me Eric and frankly, neither can you. I’ve always known that my time here is short. Last night was the first time in a long time that I slept soundly, knowing someone was by my side who cared, knowing that someone would protect me. I like that feeling and I like you. I know you like me.”
Eric nodded, unable to deny that. She had an alluring quality about her. And Eric did find her very attractive. Without another word, Nadia walked over to him and firmly kissed him on the lips.
He suddenly pulled back and stood, moving to collect his clothes and pull them on. “This isn’t right. I’m going out for a bit.” He left hurriedly, needing to escape to think for a few minutes.
Tears welled up in Nadia’s eyes as Eric walked out of the room. She made her way to the shower, letting the hot water wash over her, feeling the tears begin to flow. She allowed herself to sob quietly.
Ten minutes later, Eric entered the room, cup of coffee in hand. Hearing soft sobs coming from the bathroom, he collapsed onto the bed, head in his hands. What had he done? Dear Lord, what had he done? He’d failed Nadia, Sydney and the whole CIA but worst of all, he’d hurt Nadia. He jumped as a hand touched his shoulder. Looking up, he saw Nadia standing there, dripping wet, wearing only a towel. She gently reached to stroke his hair.
Looking up at her face, he saw her tear-stained eyes. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her to him. “Please don’t cry anymore,” he said in a low voice before leaning in to kiss her, ignoring the fact that they both became soaked in the process. “Please don’t cry…” he whispered. Nadia gently rubbed his back. “I’m sorry Nadia…” Eric started.
She stroked his cheek. “Shhhhhhh.” Taking his hands, she placed them on the towel and moved them to undo it, letting it fall to the floor. She then kissed him again.
“I lose myself with you…” Eric whispered.
“It’s okay. Lose yourself Eric… lose yourself and love me.”
