Booth knew one thing – that the screams would haunt him for the rest of his life. As an afterthought, he faintly wondered how long that would be.

When they brought her back, his heart leapt in his throat because at first he thought she was dead. He moved to her side, pulling her into his arms. “Bones?” he whispered desperately, his voice almost gone.

She moaned, shifting in his arms, and he thanked God for that. He kissed her forehead softly, whispering again. “I’m right here Bones.” Another moan, punctuated by a barely audible whimper at the end. “I don’t care what happens but I’m not letting them take you again.”

At once, he surveyed her injuries – the broken arm, the torn clothes, the blood. He’d seen a lot in his time, but the thought of the pain that had been inflicted on her almost made him sick.

She coughed. “Don’t make promises…” Those words were so like her and all she could manage.

Kissing her forehead again, he added. “Shhh, They’ll find us soon Bones.”
