“Gorramitt,” Jayne muttered under his breath. The bar fight had started innocently enough… well, as innocently as a bar fight could anyhow. Just a minor disagreement and he’d jumped in for the fun of it as soon as it had escalated. He chuckled at the thought, wincing as the scrape on his cheek twinged.
“I’m glad you’re pleased with yourself at least,” Mal called from the next cell over. “We didn’t need to get stuck here an extra day. We’ve got a job to do and a schedule to keep.”
“Yer one to talk about schedules. ‘Sides, t’weren’t my fault, Mal. It’s not like I started it.”
“Well you sure got gung ho about participating.”
“Ain’t nothin’ to worry about. Zoe’ll have us out of here in an hour or so.”
“I don’t think you’re truly comprehendin my meaning or the laws here. Bar fights are started by drunks. Drunks are left overnight to sleep it off and sober up. We’re stuck here till morning.”
“Ya mean I’ve gotta spend my birthday in jail – again?”
“Do you hear me not responding to that comment? Because I’m not even giving voice to a response.”
A long moment of silence followed. Mal was content to sit in silence, trying to decide if there was any good way to get out and leave Jayne behind. Not that it would work, but indulging in the fantasy didn’t seem to hurt none.
“So what’re we gonna do here all night?” Jayne asked in his typical fashion.
“We’re going to sit and wait until morning. Or, if you’re particularly adventurous, you could try sleeping, though I’m not sure I’d want to risk that.”
“Thanks a lot,” Jayne muttered under his breath and leaned back against the wall, arms crossed and face hard, glaring at anyone who cared enough to look.
