But WAY too much coincidence.

Fandom is being yanked around. We are a puppet in the corporate game.

1. Fanlib mess happens

2. Fandom throws a fit.

3. Mass deletion of 500 ljs [including fandom ljs] reportedly caused by an "unknown" agency [WFI - site with spyware, recommend you don't look it up], while a known agency reported the same concerns over very real pedophiles and lj rebuffed them.

4. "One of the FanLib founders is associated with SixApart, which just so happens to own LJ."

5. Fanlib wants a monopoly on fanfiction to make a profit.

6. LJ deletions have made Fanlib look GOOD according to a lot of people.

Who is writing LJ's paycheck? I KNOW that WFI has been after LJ for months, but why now? Why this week? And why did LJ listen? They are backing off, but still everyone is nervous, which again, makes Fanlib forgotten.

WAY TOO MUCH COINCIDENCE PEOPLE. WAY TOO MUCH. I THINK MY FIC IS STAYING ON MY OWN WEBSITE FOR A WHILE. KTHANKSMUCH.

Does it seem farfetched that this is the case? Maybe. But like I said, too much coincidence. If we followed the money what would we find?

Okay, he admits being unprofessional, impolite and inappropriate, but NOW we should trust him? Can we say, kid in cookie jar. If this happened once on that site, it'll happen again.

Beware.

I saw this theory posted on Aca-Fan http://www.henryjenkins.org/2007/05/transforming_fan_culture_into.html

Not his theory but interesting considering who is running FanLib [the former CEO of Yahoo, and supposedly a former RIAA executive who has started setting precedent in case law on music downloads].

Quote on Aca-Fan, from AngiePen:
[see her post here: http://angiepen.livejournal.com/38593.html?format=light]

"You know, this is probably just me being paranoid here but since the TOS prohibits any posting of material which violates someone else's copyright, they could in theory have set up this site to draw in as many fanfic writers as possible with the intention of turning around and smacking all of them for copyright violation, whether that means direct prosecution of people who are writing fics based on properties whose owners are represented on the FanLib board, or sending notification with names and e-mails and copies of stories to the copyright holders who are not associated with the site. I'm just saying."

Given who's running it... think about it? There's no case law on fanfiction and it's not illegal [under Fair Use Law], but what if this is to try and SET some case law down? So the corporate organization can theoretically control even more and thereby profit from it? They have already shown an inclination to prohibit fair use. These people have no care for our fandom culture, did no research on it, considered us all mindless, gloryhogging robots, patronized us and expected us to go along for the ride?

Uh huh. Yeah. Right.

They should have at least taken the time to research the culture they were about to try to invade. Any anthropologist could have told them that. Duh.

Update on FanLib.

General Summary: http://icarusancalion.livejournal.com/626928.html

Buncha links: http://community.livejournal.com/paire_love/374438.html?#cutid1

I HIGHLY recommend deleting your stuff off there if you have it on the site. They SAY their TOS only cover your stuff while on the site, but given all the shady stuff... sooner the better it comes off.

Please read and be informed.

I'd be wary of any fanfic writers joining the new site, FanLib. Seems they make money off your writing while having you indemnify their involvement if you get sued. Oh, and they also reserve the right to sell, copy, even ALTER your stories.

See for yourself. Post to a FAQ with lotsa links.

Their trolls [aka CEOs and founders etc] troll LJs saying this isnt' true.
